How to Choose the Right Cosmetic Surgeon

You've done your homework, saved money, weighed the benefits v. risks and decided that plastic or cosmetic surgery is the right choice for you. So now what? You have to find the right surgeon for you. That is easier said than done. Like any major decision, you should not take the first option that comes along, nor should you make your choice too quickly. According to Dr. Calvert, there are a few steps you should take to ensure your surgeon is a good one.

  1. Ask for referrals from your primary care doctor, friends and family who have had procedures done. The best referrals come from those you know and trust
  2. Check their credentials through the American Board of Medical Specialties at www.abms.org.
  3. The internet is possibly the best resource for tracing down information about a person. Check the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to find board-certified plastic surgeons near you. The can be found at www.plasticsurgery.org.
  4. Find out if your surgeon is a member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. A surgeon will not be accepted as a member until they are board certified, among other requirements.
  5. Check for state licensing through the state board of medicine. Your surgeon should be licensed in the state you are planning to have your surgery.
  6. Having hospital privileges means the medical staffing board at the hospital trusts your surgeon to perform your operation and that he or she is properly trained and credentialed. Be sure your surgeon has these privileges.
  7. Check on the internet or at your county courthouse to see if your surgeon has any malpractice law suits against them.
  8. Check that your doctor is properly trained and has all his or her credentials. Check to see if they participate in continuing education, as this keeps doctors up to speed on the latest technologies and practices.
  9.  Verify malpractice insurance coverage.
  10. Choose a surgeon who specializes in the procedure you want to have. Most surgeons become well known for specific surgeries and produce excellent results with those procedures consistently.
  11. Ignore advertising. It basically means nothing. Make your own judgment based on the information you gather.
