Rhinoplasty: Do You Need One?

It has been proven by studies that the nose is a center-point feature that the brain focuses on upon seeing another person's face. By measures of symmetry and proportion, the nose has been proven to be the most important factor contributing to the characteristic or beauty of a face; a deformed nose can affect a person's social life, attractiveness, and confidence highly.

Reconstructive rhinoplasty refers to restoring the normal shape and function of the nose after being damaged from an autoimmune disorder, congenital abnormality, traumatic accident, intra-nasal drug abuse, previous injudicious cosmetic surgery, or cancer involvement. Septoplasty may also be performed to improve nasal breathing function. Primary rhinoplasty refers to first-time rhinoplasty whether it is performed for functional, aesthetic, or reconstructive purposes.

Rhinoplasty is performed under a general or local anesthetic. There are two possible approaches to the nose: closed approach and open approach. Skin incision for an open rhinoplasty may be “v-shaped” or a “stair-step” shaped incision. This helps the surgeon attain a precise closure and camouflaging of the resulting scar. The incisions for a rhinoplasty are hidden inside the nose with a small incision across the base of the nose, depicted by a dotted line.

The patient returns home after the surgery with antibiotics, pain and steroid medication mostly recommended. Though it is safe to be outdoors, most people choose to remain home for a week. External sutures are usually removed 4 to 5 days after surgery while the external cast is removed at one week. Internal stents are usually removed at four days to two weeks and the periorbital bruising usually lasts two weeks. There is moderate shifting and settling of the nose due to wound healing during the first year. Post operative bleeding is uncommon but often resolves without needing treatment. However, it is always best to report to your surgeon if bleeding occurs.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty or "non-surgical nose job” refers to reshaping the nose with injectable substances. It can be performed in the outpatient setting without anesthesia. Another non-surgical and temporary option is through the use of flexible "nose inserts". They are placed in the nostril area between the nose tip and back of the nose and reshape one's nose only while worn.

Although rhinoplasty is usually considered to be safe and successful, several complications can still arise like infection, adhesion which is rare but if it occurs, it needs to be cut away ASAP to avoid nasal obstruction which could affect breathing. Septal perforation can also cause chronic nose bleeding, crusting, difficult breathing and whistling with breathing. Variable degree of numbness to the nose for months can also be present if the incision is made across the collumella (open-approach).

“Pig-like look”, “Pinched look” “Saddle nose”, “Polly break” are the names of the deformities if there is even a slight mistake done during the procedure. Certainly, there are a lot of questions playing in your mind right now. Feel free to ask us at http://www.jaycalvertmd.com. You can also ask about breast implants/augmentation, or plastic surgery in general and we’d be glad to get back to you within 24-48 hours. If you’re in Los Angeles or Beverly Hills, you can make your appointment online. Stay beautiful always and have a good day!

Breast Augmentation, Should I Do It?

This is one of the vital questions that perhaps everyone woman in the world have asked themselves at some points in their lives. Along with that question comes a long list of never-ending questions under the same umbrella. If you’re a woman, have you asked yourself this question? If you’re a man, have you been asked this question by a girl; a girlfriend, mother, or just a friend perhaps? What were you answers? Were you truthful? Or just said what you were compelled to say. Anyways, here are some of the things you should know about breast augmentation. Read on…

It is commonly known as mammoplasty or breast enlargement/augmentation, or boob job. Breast augmentation involves inserting implants either over or under the pectoralis muscles which are the main muscles of the chest. There are also alternatives that are less expensive but less immediate and less dramatic, such as breast enlargement pills, breast enlargement creams, breast enlargement exercises and breast pumps. Women with implants are able and encouraged to breastfeed though implants may cause difficulties in nursing

Studies suggest that women who undergo breast implantation are slightly more likely to have undergone psychotherapy, have low levels of self-esteem, and have higher prevalences of depression, and mental illness (including body dysmorphia) as compared to the general population. They are nearly three times as likely to commit suicide, and risked death from alcohol and drug abuse as other women. Post-operative surveys have reported improvement on physical health, physical appearance, sexual function, social life, and self confidence/esteem. Overall, most patients report long-term satisfaction with their implants even when they have to be re-operated for complications or aesthetic reasons.

This surgical procedure is a major surgery and takes approximately one to two hours. Just like anything else, this could also sometimes cause problems like general anesthesia mistakes, breast implant ruptures which could be life threatening, sepsis or infection, difficulty in detection of breast abnormalities and tumors through mammography but sub-muscular implants are makes detection less difficult. Upon recovery, you won’t be able to resume to your normal activities right away and you’ll have to wear specially-padded bras and take painkillers to reduce pain and discomfort. This is a serious decision which you have to ponder over and over again before doing it. There are many dangers and risks and you have to ask yourself if your reasons to do it are worth it.

We suggest that breast implants should be a final resort. If you’ve done everything else you can for perfect female breasts and still not satisfied, then it's time to consider breast implants. When Natural Beauty Fails- Plastic Surgery Enters!

Everyone dreams of a wonderful beauty. Some even dream for a face that could launch a thousand vessels. But that’s in dream and not in real world. In real world, each of us will always have something bad to notice in ourselves especially in the way we look. We can never deny the fact that our sense of vision is very powerful that our first impression will always depend on the way a person looks.

And then, here comes our perception of beauty. Though as they say beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, it is saddening that with the help of media, most people have a distorted perception of beauty. The unbelievable beauty we see on TV, movies make us feel “not good enough” to categorize ourselves as “ugly”. But then, let’s jump on the bandwagon and let other people decide on what the true essence of beauty is for us. As in the year-after-year Miss Universe Q & A portion: “What is the essence of a woman?”, “Skin deep beauty” is ‘never’ the ideal answer.

But, now let’s talk about reconstructive plastic surgery. The one that people don’t undergo just to be more beautiful, but rather to live as most normally as possible. It is usually performed to correct functional impairment, improve function, and to approximate a normal appearance. Reconstructive surgery includes hand surgery, craniofacial surgery for facial bone fractures or breaks, breast reduction, breast reconstruction after a mastectomy, microsurgery, tumor removal, cleft lip and palate surgery, scar and laceration repair, the treatment of burns and creating a new outer ear when one is congenitally absent.

Pediatric craniofacial surgery mostly revolves around the treatment of congenital anomalies, while hand surgery is concerned with acute injuries and chronic diseases of the hand and wrist. Microsurgery is reconstruction of missing tissues by transferring a piece of tissue to the reconstruction site and reconnecting blood vessels. Free flaps of skin, muscle, bone, fat, or a combination may be removed from the body, moved to another site on the body, and reconnected to a blood supply by suturing arteries and veins.

Plastic surgery, no matter how minor, is still a medical procedure which can affect your physical wellbeing and health. Consider very carefully the benefits and drawbacks of the surgery you’re interested in. While physical beauty is something we all appreciate and strive for, sometimes surgery isn’t the first and the only option. Make a well informed decision; know all of the risks, complications, and benefits involved before making a final decision. Also, consider your other options and make a list of comparison of its benefits and risks. Make sure to write it down so you can look at it from time to time until you can come up with a prudent and realistic decision.

Some people find their physical flaws seriously limit their social interaction, personal success, and their overall self-satisfaction. This is a common issue but can be a serious problem when taken to obsession. Obsession can be more likely a matter of mental health than an issue of physical appearance. For further questions about plastic surgery in general, reconstructive, cosmetics, kindly log on to: http://www.drcalvert.com and http://www.jaycalvertmd.com. If you’re in Los Angeles or Beverly Hills, you can make your appointment or submit your questions online, and we’d be glad to answer your questions truthfully within 24-48 hours! Stay beautiful in your own way and have a good day!

Jay Calvert the Lipoaugmentation Expert

Dr. Jay Calvert is an expert in an increasingly popular surgical field.
Recently lipoaugmentation has become an increasingly popular surgery. Lipoaugmentation is another word for fat transfers.
Fat transfers is when a surgeon removes fat from one part of the body, usually an area where fat is unwanted, and transfers it to another area in which fat is wanted or preferred. Although many skeptics wonder why in the world someone would transfer fat instead of eliminating it, there are many reasons.
The most common type of fat transfer is transfer to lips. There are people who believe that their lips are very thin and so they decide to transfer fat to their lips from other areas. Many people claim that fat transfers do not last because the fat simply dissolves with time.
Dr. Jay Calvert, however, has not had this experience happen to him. With, Dr. Calvert’s experience it is very unlikely for anybody’s fat transfer to simply “dissolve”.
Although many doctors agree that some fat transfers are very difficult to do, Dr. Calvert has enough experience and can create very sound surgical plans. Moreover, he knows when an area will require two or three lipoaugmentation procedures before the desired results are acquired. Depending on individual desired effect, previous surgery, and availability of quality transferable fat, Dr. Calvert’s can work to yield very satisfactory results.

California Plastic Surgeon Becoming Top Choice for Revision Surgery

With the number of people turning to plastic surgery, and in particular rhinoplasty, to improve their looks and their self-esteem rising each year, the number of people who are ultimately unsatisfied with their procedure is no doubt rising as well.

According to a survey by a national plastic surgery association, approximately 15 percent of people who undergo rhinoplasty opt to undergo revision rhinoplasty, either because of necessity or person preference. That statistic doesn’t take into account the many other patients who are unsatisfied but are reluctant to undergo the procedure a second time.

But one California plastic surgeon, thanks to his extensive experience, has become the go-to professional for revision rhinoplasty, so much so that other plastic surgeons have begun referring their patients to him for revision surgery themselves.

Dr. Jay Calvert, MD, FACS, brings an intensive approach to a delicate area of plastic surgery, that of performing additional work on an area of the patient that has often been previously attended to by another physician while also re-instilling confidence in the procedure in a patient that may be wary of undergoing the operation again.

“Revision of a previous rhinoplasty operation is a technically exacting endeavor,” explains Dr. Calvert, who has provided expert plastic surgery insight on such television talk shows as The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tyra Banks Show. “Additionally, it takes a compassionate surgeon to understand your concerns and to answer your questions when it comes to having your nasal operation revised.”

Dr. Calvert applies the same techniques to revision rhinoplasty as he applies to the many primary rhinoplasty operations he performs as well. Using his skill as an artist and surgeon, Dr. Calvert meticulously shapes the nose to fit the face of the individual.

“No two faces are exactly alike,” Dr. Calvert explains, “so I take the entire facial presentation into account when evaluating rhinoplasty patients and establishing a treatment plan with each patient.”

The procedure involves several complex techniques, Dr. Calvert said, and sometimes employs the use of rib cartilage grafts, ear cartilage grafts, septum and fascia (a thin tissue membrane). Through these procedures, Dr. Calvert rebuilds noses that have been damaged by trauma or are unsatisfactory to the patient following the original procedure. So adept is Dr. Calvert at rebuilding noses that are aesthetically pleasing and functional that he has become one of the leading practitioners in this area.

Surgeon: Men Becoming More at East with Plastic Surgery

Perhaps due to reluctance of being considered vain or self-centered, men have, for the most part, shied away from undergoing plastic surgery over the years.

While they might go so far as to wear special undergarments to squeeze their body in to a more “fit” appearance, dye their hair or even wear a “wig” (aka toupee), actually seeking the aid of a surgeon to make corrections to areas on their body they consider physically inadequate was pretty much out of the question.

But all that has changed. Men are increasingly seeking out plastic surgeons for cosmetic procedures that go from head (rhinoplasty, face lifts, eyelid tucks) to toe (calf inserts, laser hair removal, chemical peels).

While this may be a relatively new phenomenon, it shouldn’t be an unexpected one, says noted plastic surgeon Dr. Jay Calvert, MD, FACS.

“Men are becoming more aware of the benefits of a more youthful and attractive appearance in the business and social world,” explained Dr. Calvert, whose expert advice on plastic surgery has earned him appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tyra Banks Show. “My goal is to create a brighter, natural look so my patients appear as a younger version of themselves.”

A survey by a leading plastic surgery association found that 51 percent of men gave an overall approval of cosmetic surgery and 18 percent of men consider it a possibility in their lives at some point. In 2009, men undergoing some sort of cosmetic surgery procedure rose eight percent.

There isn’t one single procedure that men are seeking to have done either, Dr. Calvert points out. Men arriving at his offices in California are requesting a variety of procedures, including rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, brow lifts, eyelid tucks, Botox injections and laser hair removal.

Facelifts, Dr. Calvert contends, are a particular area that can benefit man’s appearance greatly.

“Men often seek a facelift because they are concerned about droopiness in the face and neck area and/or heaviness in the jowl area,” Dr. Calvert explained.  “A good candidate for a facelift for men is any male in good physical and psychological health who wishes to enhance their physical appearance through cosmetic surgery.

“A typical patient who seeks a facelift for men is between the ages of thirty and seventy.  Men are good candidates for a facelift because their skin is often thicker and less wrinkly than women’s skin.”

Many men are also taking advantage of the RoxSpa Aesthetics featured at Dr. Calvert’s Beverly Hills facilities, where they can choose from laser hair removal, facial rejuvenation and chemical peels to improve the skin, pixel laser skin resurfacing to remove acne scars or the patented “Accent Your Body” laser body contouring procedure.

When it comes to plastic surgery for men, the sky’s the limit

Where once men might have restricted their cosmetic surgery to rhinoplasty, male patients these days are having it all done in a desire to take advantage of the variety of procedures that are available to them.

That’s the conclusion of noted plastic surgeon Dr. Jay Calvert, MD, FACS, who has seen a marked increase in the number of men who have come through the doors of his facility.

“Men are becoming more aware of the benefits of a more youthful and attractive appearance in the business and social world,” explained Dr. Calvert, whose expert advice on plastic surgery has earned him appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tyra Banks Show. “For instance, men often seek a facelift because they are concerned about droopiness in the face and neck area and/or heaviness in the jowl area,” he explained.

Rhinoplasty is still the number one procedure sought by men, Dr. Calvert said, and with good reason.

“Rhinoplasty is the most popular cosmetic procedures for men because bringing the nose into balance with the rest of the face can dramatically improve one's appearance,” Dr. Calvert explained. “The nose can be considered the dominant feature of one’s face and there are many individuals looking to make changes to their nose to affect their overall look. Even the slightest change to the nose can greatly affect one’s overall facial appearance, improving their look and boosting self-confidence.

In many cases, he stated, men undergoing rhinoplasty also opt to combine a chin implant or chin liposuction to balance the face out even further, which in turn improves the jawline.

The next most popular procedure on the list is a facelift that, like rhinoplasty, can greatly improve the appearance with just a single procedure.

“Men are becoming more aware of the benefits of a more youthful and attractive appearance in the business and social world,” Dr. Calvert explained. “Men often seek a facelift because they are concerned about droopiness in the face and neck area and/or heaviness in the jowl area.”

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is also popular with male patients of Dr. Calvert who wish to eliminate the tired appearance of their face due to drooping eyelids.

“Incisions are hidden and the eyelid procedure is often done in conjunction with a facelift for older men,” he said, “but many younger men choose the procedure to eliminate puffiness around the eyes.”

Non-surgical procedures popular with men include Botox injections to remove worry lines, frown lines, laugh lines and crow’s feet; fillers to plump out the jowls and fill in depressions from surgical scars and acne, and laser hair removal.

Survey: Lip Augmentation Procedures on the Rise

Flip though any celebrity magazine and one thing become abundantly clear: full lips are a common feature on almost all Hollywood starlets.

The reason for the attraction of full, well-formed lips may not be scientifically proven yet, but the fact that such an attraction exists is undeniable. Indeed, the number of lip augmentation procedures performed has steadily increased since 2000 (more than 21,000 such procedures were performed in 2009).

But in the effort to augments lips in the most natural looking way possible, one California plastic surgeon has developed perhaps the most comprehensive procedure.

Dr. Jay Calvert, MD, FACS, a nationally recognized plastic surgeon, has developed the LA Lip Enhancement™ which utilizes the patient's own tissue (fat and deep layers of the skin) to augment their lips, rather than chemicals, inserts or donor tissue material.

“I originally created this operation as an additional technique for patients undergoing rhinoplasty or facelift surgery,” Dr. Calvert explained. “However, it has become a primary procedure for many patients in my practice.”

The procedure has several benefits, Dr. Calvert points out. One, the patient does not necessarily need to have thin lips, yet the results will be noticeable. Second, unlike patients who have undergone Restylane® or Collagen treatments, a person undergoing the LA Lip Enhancement™ treatment does not necessarily have to return every three to six months for a re-injection.

The result, says Dr. Calvert, is  “an almost-permanent enhancement of the lips through the use of the patient's own tissue resulting in a more attractive, youthful mouth and lips.”

In the outpatient procedure, two techniques are used: a thin strip of skin, usually from an old scar, is excised and passed through the upper lip and occasionally the lower lip, in much the same manner as a lip implant. Second, fat is drawn from the hips, abdomen or knees and injected into the lips.

During the procedure, the patient is sedated with a local anesthesia for their safety and comfort, Dr. Calvert explained.

“The combination of the two procedures seems to work best to create soft, beautifully enhanced, natural lips,” Dr. Calvert said. “The swelling of the lips can be somewhat striking for several days to a week after the procedure. The lips will return to a natural look and feel that will keep getting better with time.”

Many patients, said Dr. Calvert, often combine the LA Lip Enhancement™ procedure with other procedures such as a facelift, rhinoplasty or breast augmentation. In addition, the procedure can be combined with minor plastic surgery procedures such as a lip lift or suspension, a chemical peel of the perioral region (area around the lips) or laser resurfacing.
Dr. Calvert cautions that the procedure may require follow up work.

“Because of the unpredictability of the fat injections, it may be necessary to repeat the fat injections around one year after the procedure,” he explained. “The fat does tend to shrink over time and it is common that the patient wants to see more of an effect. Like all things in plastic surgery, the operation does not stop the aging process; it merely creates the look that the patient wants to see until nature prevails.”

Endoscope Becoming Important Tool in Plastic Surgery

For millions of people, the effects of aging, particularly on the face, can be devastating. The eyes, chin and cheeks can be depressing reminders of the progress of time. But many people are opting to defy time with plastic surgery operations to key facial areas and according to Dr. Jay Calvert, MD FACS, an endoscope may be a helpful new tool.

According to recent statistics by a national plastic surgery association, facial plastic surgery procedures are among the top requests of patients consulting a plastic surgeon. In the last five years, the survey states, a face life, or rhytidectomy, is one of the most requested of all invasive procedures. In 2009, more than 103,000 such operations were performed.

This boom in facial plastic surgery has ushered in a new era of techniques and Dr. Calvert has become a leading proponent of the use of endoscopes in this procedure, highlighting its usefulness in making surgery as minimally invasive as possible.

“With an endoscope, incisions can be minimized, visualization improved, and results maximized through the use of an endoscope in facelifts and browlifts,” says. Dr. Calvert, who has appeared on The Oprah Show and The Tyra Banks Show as a plastic surgery expert.  “Facelifts, browlifts, midfacelifts, and necklifts are all procedures that have been made easier by the use of the endoscope.”

An endoscope is a medical instrument that consists of a flexible tube that contains a fiber optical and lens system that allows the surgeon to examine the interior of a body cavity without making an incision. With this instrument, the surgeon can view the structure of the area to be operated on and assess the proper procedure before making any incisions. Prior to the use of an endoscope, surgeons may have used imaging devices that could produce a picture of the area to be operated on, but would lack the detail that viewing it with an endoscope would provide.

Dr. Calvert has been at the forefront of the use of endoscopes in facelifts and browlifts, beginning in 1933 when, while visiting a plastic surgery workshop at Emory University as a medical student, he first saw the benefits of endoscopic surgery. Since that time, he says, the endoscope has been a valuable instrument through his medical training and in his current practice.

But the endoscope does not take the place of personal interaction with each patient, Dr. Calvert points out. He own approach, he states, involves intense consultation before any surgical procedures are begun.

“I like to work compassionately with each patient to customize a plan for their facial rejuvenation,” Dr. Calvert states. “I believe that each patient has distinct goals, unique anatomy, and varied life situations that must be incorporated into an individual, custom plan.”
