Surgeon: Men Becoming More at East with Plastic Surgery

Perhaps due to reluctance of being considered vain or self-centered, men have, for the most part, shied away from undergoing plastic surgery over the years.

While they might go so far as to wear special undergarments to squeeze their body in to a more “fit” appearance, dye their hair or even wear a “wig” (aka toupee), actually seeking the aid of a surgeon to make corrections to areas on their body they consider physically inadequate was pretty much out of the question.

But all that has changed. Men are increasingly seeking out plastic surgeons for cosmetic procedures that go from head (rhinoplasty, face lifts, eyelid tucks) to toe (calf inserts, laser hair removal, chemical peels).

While this may be a relatively new phenomenon, it shouldn’t be an unexpected one, says noted plastic surgeon Dr. Jay Calvert, MD, FACS.

“Men are becoming more aware of the benefits of a more youthful and attractive appearance in the business and social world,” explained Dr. Calvert, whose expert advice on plastic surgery has earned him appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tyra Banks Show. “My goal is to create a brighter, natural look so my patients appear as a younger version of themselves.”

A survey by a leading plastic surgery association found that 51 percent of men gave an overall approval of cosmetic surgery and 18 percent of men consider it a possibility in their lives at some point. In 2009, men undergoing some sort of cosmetic surgery procedure rose eight percent.

There isn’t one single procedure that men are seeking to have done either, Dr. Calvert points out. Men arriving at his offices in California are requesting a variety of procedures, including rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, brow lifts, eyelid tucks, Botox injections and laser hair removal.

Facelifts, Dr. Calvert contends, are a particular area that can benefit man’s appearance greatly.

“Men often seek a facelift because they are concerned about droopiness in the face and neck area and/or heaviness in the jowl area,” Dr. Calvert explained.  “A good candidate for a facelift for men is any male in good physical and psychological health who wishes to enhance their physical appearance through cosmetic surgery.

“A typical patient who seeks a facelift for men is between the ages of thirty and seventy.  Men are good candidates for a facelift because their skin is often thicker and less wrinkly than women’s skin.”

Many men are also taking advantage of the RoxSpa Aesthetics featured at Dr. Calvert’s Beverly Hills facilities, where they can choose from laser hair removal, facial rejuvenation and chemical peels to improve the skin, pixel laser skin resurfacing to remove acne scars or the patented “Accent Your Body” laser body contouring procedure.

Dr. Calvert is a board-certified member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and serves the Beverly Hills, Orange County and Los Angeles area. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on plastic surgery and has presented his techniques at national and international conferences.
